Bio
Recruited from local side Abbotsford, Ron Carruthers was a pacy centreman and wingman whose career peaked during the difficult war years at Victoria Park. After a quiet start following his debut in 1940, he established himself as a regular in the Magpies' midfield by 1943, using his natural speed to break lines and drive the ball forward. His standout campaign came in 1945, where he played 17 games including two finals, but a severe knee injury early the following season effectively derailed his momentum. Carruthers managed a brief return in late 1947 before retiring, though he later proved his elite athleticism remained intact by winning both the 75 and 100-yard sprints at the famous Stawell Gift in 1953. His family’s connection to the club continued through his son, Ron Jnr, who donned the black and white in the 1960s.
