Bio
Born into the club as the son of former Magpie Ron Carruthers Snr, Ron Carruthers appeared destined for a long tenure at Victoria Park after being recruited from Preston Wanderers. A fleet-footed wingman renowned for his exquisite kicking skills and strong marking hands, he debuted as a 17-year-old in 1961 and made an immediate impact, most notably polling three Brownlow votes in just his fifth game against Essendon. Despite this high-end potential, his career was derailed by a thigh injury sustained in the Queen's Birthday clash against Melbourne, which saw him lose his place in the side. In a move considered ruthless even for the era, he was delisted during the 1962 pre-season at just 18 years of age, and after a brief, unhappy stint with Carlton's reserves, he left the VFL to play country football with Loch.
