Family

Recruited from the Hamilton Imperials in the Western District, Ron Lienert arrived at Punt Road in 1964 to join his older brother, Brian, on the Tigers' list. A versatile utility standing 178cm, Lienert was capable of playing as a wingman, half-forward, or ruck-rover, using his mobility to cover ground effectively. His senior VFL career was brief, comprised of two consecutive appearances late in the 1964 season against Fitzroy and St Kilda, followed by a season contributing to the reserves. However, Lienert’s departure from the VFL marked the beginning of an extraordinary tenure as a football journeyman; he played over 400 games across 29 seasons, traversing the VFA with Yarraville and captain-coaching various country clubs including Glenthompson and Ferntree Gully, before eventually retiring in 1990 as a premiership coach in Port Macquarie.
