The son of former Saint Arnold Wilson, Ron Wilson was a blisteringly fast half-back recruited from Donald who balanced football with a successful career as a professional sprinter. While his raw speed saw him win the prestigious Dandenong and Wangaratta Gifts, he initially struggled to break into Melbourne’s senior lineup, managing only a solitary game in 1934 before eventually finding a home at St Kilda three years later. A dashing defender who used his acceleration to break lines, his career was defined by a major controversy in 1941 when he defected to VFA club Coburg without a clearance during the recruitment wars of the "throw-pass" era. Handed a severe three-year ban by the league for the transgression, Wilson eventually served his suspension and returned to the Saints in 1945 to play out one final season before finishing his career as captain-coach of Coburg.
