Bio
Originally drafted by Fremantle from the Box Hill Hawks, Sam Collins entered the AFL system as a mature-bodied recruit hoping to make an immediate impact. However, he struggled to cement a regular position in the Dockers' lineup, managing just 14 games across two seasons before being delisted at the end of 2017. Rather than fading from view, Collins produced a dominant 2018 campaign in the VFL with Werribee, showcasing elite intercepting ability that demanded a second chance. The Gold Coast Suns subsequently threw him a lifeline via a special assistance state-league access rule ahead of the 2019 season, a move that proved to be a masterstroke for the club's defensive structure.
Since arriving at Carrara, Collins has transformed from a fringe player into one of the competition's most reliable key defenders. Renowned for his physical strength, spoiling capability, and courage in the air, he became the anchor of the Suns' backline during a significant rebuilding phase. His individual excellence was recognised when he won the 2020 Club Champion award, and he has since entrenched himself as a vital cultural leader, serving as vice-captain. Now a seasoned veteran, Collins remains the first magnet on the board for the Suns' defence, tasked with marshalling the back six and shutting down the opposition's most dangerous power forwards.
