Recruited from Western Australia, Sam Kekovich arrived at North Melbourne with high expectations and quickly established himself as a talented, if occasionally unconventional, key forward. A natural showman with strong hands and an accurate boot, he made an immediate impact at Arden Street, winning the Syd Barker Medal in 1969 at just 19 years of age. Kekovich topped the club's goalkicking three times and was an integral member of the Kangaroos' breakthrough 1975 premiership side, often drifting between full-forward and the ruck to utilise his athleticism against opposing defenders.

His time at North Melbourne concluded after the 1976 season, leading to a move to Collingwood for the final chapter of his career. However, his stint at Victoria Park was marred by persistent injuries and indifferent form, restricting him to just four appearances over two seasons before his retirement. While modern audiences largely recognise him as a satirical media commentator and the face of distinct advertising campaigns, Kekovich remains a revered figure in North Melbourne history for his pivotal role in the club's golden era of the 1970s.
