Bio
Selected by Melbourne with pick nine in the 2015 National Draft, Sam Weideman arrived with high expectations as the grandson of Collingwood legend Murray Weideman, though he did not qualify as a father-son selection. A prototypical key forward known for his overhead marking and structured lead-up play, he showed flashes of significant potential for the Demons, most notably during the 2018 finals series where he played a pivotal role in an Elimination Final victory over Geelong. However, consistency proved elusive throughout his tenure at Melbourne, and he often found himself on the fringe of the best 22 behind established targets like Tom McDonald and Ben Brown, ultimately missing selection in the club's 2021 premiership side. Seeking greater opportunity, Weideman was traded to Essendon ahead of the 2023 season, where he initially served as a key target in the absence of Peter Wright. Despite a promising start at the Bombers, his form tapered off, and after a brief experimental switch to defence in the VFL, he was delisted at the conclusion of the 2024 season.
