Bio
Recruited from Hobart, Scott Clayton arrived at Fitzroy in 1981 and quickly established himself as a mainstay in the Lions' defence. Operating primarily as a full-back, he was a disciplined and close-checking operator who relied on concentration and positioning rather than flair to quell opposition forwards. Clayton was a key figure during a competitive period for the club, playing 160 games over a decade and featuring in multiple finals campaigns as the Lions consistently punched above their weight throughout the 1980s.
Although he was a serviceable player who offered great stability to Fitzroy, Clayton's arguably greater legacy in the game was forged after his retirement in 1990. Transitioning into list management, he became one of the industry's most prominent recruiters, widely credited with assembling the core of the Brisbane Lions' triple-premiership dynasty. His extensive career in administration also saw him lead recruiting teams at the Western Bulldogs, Gold Coast Suns, and North Melbourne, cementing his reputation as a keen evaluator of talent.
