Bio
Recruited from Old Scotch, Scott Maginness continued a strong family association with Hawthorn as the son of former player Norm Maginness. Joining the club during its golden era, he quickly cemented his place in the senior side not as a ball-winner, but as a disciplined run-with player. His distinct lack of goal-kicking output—managing just eight majors across his career—highlighted his strictly defensive role, where his concentration and fitness allowed him to nullify dangerous opposition midfielders.
Maginness became an integral component of the Hawks' back-to-back flags in 1988 and 1989, executing his tagging duties effectively in high-pressure finals. While he often flew under the radar compared to the team's superstars, his reliability made him a fixture in the lineup through to the mid-1990s. He retired in 1996 as a dual premiership player, leaving a legacy of selfless structural play that has been mirrored by his son, Finn Maginness, in the modern era.
