Bio
Recruited from East Ballarat, Sean Simpson initially struggled to establish himself at the top level, managing just a handful of senior appearances across three seasons with St Kilda. After being delisted by the Saints at the end of 1990, his career appeared at a crossroads until Geelong offered him a lifeline with the fifth selection in the 1991 Pre-Season Draft. The move proved to be a masterstroke for both player and club, as Simpson immediately cemented his spot in the senior side, playing 21 games in his debut season at Kardinia Park and transforming from a fringe dweller into a key component of the Cats' midfield rotation.
Standing 188cm, Simpson was tall for a wingman of his era, using his size and running power to great effect both as an attacking link-man and a disciplined tagger. He became a fixture in Malcolm Blight's powerhouse teams of the 1990s, featuring in the 1992, 1994, and 1995 Grand Final sides. While he often played a supporting role to the club's high-profile superstars, his consistency and versatility ensured he remained a regular selection for nearly a decade. His connection to the club continued long after his retirement, with his son Sam Simpson later donning the hoops as a father-son recruit.
