Family

Recruited as a father-son rookie selection, Sam Simpson followed his father Sean to Kardinia Park where he quickly established a reputation as a silky midfielder-forward with elite composure in traffic. Despite possessing the agility and decision-making skills required for the top level, Simpson's time at Geelong was heavily restricted by a series of soft tissue setbacks and concussion issues that prevented him from securing a permanent spot in the best 22. His career narrative is best highlighted by his inclusion late in the 2020 season, where he performed well enough to feature in the Grand Final against Richmond before sustaining a significant head knock in the decider. Unable to shake his injury curse in subsequent years to build the necessary continuity, he was eventually delisted following the 2023 season, leaving fans with only glimpses of his genuine talent.
