Recruited from East Fremantle with the first pick in the 1997 Pre-Season Draft, Shane Woewodin quickly established himself as a tireless midfielder known for his elite endurance and clean usage by foot. His time at Melbourne was defined by an exceptional 2000 campaign, where he secured a surprise Brownlow Medal victory and played a pivotal role in guiding the Demons to the Grand Final. A versatile link man who could accumulate possessions and drift forward to kick goals, he was also recognised as the club's Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Medallist in that standout year, cementing his status as one of the league's premier on-ballers.

However, his tenure at Melbourne ended abruptly in one of the more contentious moves of the era. Despite being a club leader, Woewodin was traded to Collingwood following the 2002 season, a decision the Demons attributed to necessary salary cap relief. He provided immediate experience to the Magpies' engine room, featuring in the 2003 Grand Final loss to Brisbane, but was generally unable to replicate the dominance of his Brownlow year. Woewodin was delisted by Collingwood at the conclusion of the 2005 season, retiring with exactly 200 senior games to his name.
