Bio
Recruited from Glenelg in the SANFL with pick 32 in the 1994 National Draft, Simon Cox was a tall, laconic utility distinguished by his smooth movement and a piercing left-foot kick. Despite his height of 192cm allowing him to play key positions, he often operated as a rebounding defender or an oversized wingman who could break lines with deceptive pace. His seven-season tenure at the Western Bulldogs was marked by inconsistency, as he struggled to lock down a permanent spot in a formidable lineup that regularly contested finals in the late 1990s. After being delisted by the Bulldogs at the end of 2001, Cox was thrown a lifeline by Hawthorn in the draft and enjoyed a surprisingly dominant debut season in brown and gold. He finished third in the club’s 2002 Best and Fairest count, finally delivering on his potential as a damaging outside runner, before losing his passion for the game and retiring just one season later.
