Recruited from the Tassie Mariners with pick 15 in the 2000 National Draft, Simon Wiggins carved out a decade-long career at Carlton defined by determination and versatility. While he may have lacked the elite polish expected of a high draft pick, Wiggins endeared himself to fans with his relentless work ethic and willingness to attack the contest. He operated primarily as a utility, shifting between defence and the forward line where he often played a defensive role on opposition rebounders, relying on his strong overhead marking and competitiveness to impact games.

Wiggins played through a turbulent period in Carlton's history, spanning the salary cap penalties and multiple wooden spoons of the early-to-mid 2000s. Despite the club's on-field struggles, he became a cult figure affectionately known as "The Chief," a moniker that underscored his standing as a wholehearted team player. He served as a member of the leadership group during the club's rebuilding phase under Brett Ratten, eventually departing the club at the end of the 2010 season after injury prevented him from adding to his 116 senior appearances in his final year.
