Bio
Recruited from Kerang, Sted Hay established himself as a sturdy fullback for Hawthorn during the club's breakthrough era under John Kennedy Sr. Renowned for his reliable close-checking and discipline in the defensive goal square, Hay anchored the backline during the Hawks' historic 1961 campaign, playing a pivotal role in securing the club's maiden premiership. Despite his standing as a premiership defender, his VFL career was relatively brief, as he retired from top-level football at just 25 years of age following the 1964 season to return to the country as captain-coach of his home club. He remains revered at Hawthorn as the fullback of the club's first ever flag-winning side.
