Bio
Recruited from Cheltenham, Steve Leehane established himself as a reliable defender during a dominant period for Carlton. He made an immediate impact, claiming a premiership medallion in his debut season as a half-back flanker in the 1914 Grand Final victory over South Melbourne. His fortunes turned the following year when a groin injury cruelly ruled him out of the 1915 finals series, costing him a place in the club's back-to-back flag triumph. Leehane remained a key defensive pillar, manning the full-back post in the 1916 Grand Final loss to Fitzroy, and appeared in finals matches in five of his six seasons at Princes Park. His legacy extended beyond his own career, as he was the father of Essendon premiership player Ted Leehane and VFL footballer Tom Leehane.
