Bio
Recruited from Parkside, Steven Alessio established himself as a versatile key position player who could seamlessly alternate between the ruck and the forward line. While he broke into the senior side during the 'Baby Bombers' era of the early 1990s, he missed selection for the 1993 Grand Final, eventually maturing into a permanent fixture of the team later in the decade. Standing at 199cm, Alessio was noted for his mobility and reliable set-shot kicking, allowing him to exploit opposition defenders who struggled to contain a resting ruckman with genuine goal sense.
Alessio's career reached its peak during Essendon's dominant 2000 campaign, where he played a pivotal role in the premiership side and kicked the opening goal of the Grand Final against Melbourne. He is perhaps best remembered by fans for his composure during the 2001 Anzac Day clash, where he took a contested mark and booted the match-winning goal in the dying moments. A loyal one-club player, he retired in 2003 and was later named in the Italian Team of the Century, recognising his contribution to the game as one of the premier ruck-forwards of his generation.
