Family

Steven Stretch was a dashing wingman who made an immediate impact at Melbourne after crossing over from SANFL club West Torrens. With his electrifying pace and polished skills on the outside, he quickly became a key pillar of the Demons' resurgence in the late 1980s. His quality was recognised early when he won the Keith 'Bluey' Truscott Medal as the club's Best and Fairest in 1987, just his second season at the top level. A consistent performer who rarely missed a match, Stretch was instrumental in Melbourne’s run to the 1988 Grand Final and remained a fixture in the side during their finals campaigns under John Northey.

Despite his consistent service, Stretch was delisted by the Demons at the end of 1993, a move that led him to Fitzroy via the pre-season draft. He provided valuable experience to a struggling Lions outfit for two seasons before hanging up the boots. His connection to the Melbourne Football Club continued well past his playing days, with his son Billy Stretch later donning the red and blue as a father-son recruit, cementing the family's legacy at the club.
