Bio
Recruited from Leongatha, Steven Wallis established himself as one of Footscray’s most durable and uncompromising servants during a volatile era for the club. Breaking into the senior side in 1983, he set a club record for the most consecutive games played from debut, immediately proving himself as a fierce competitor capable of playing as a close-checking defender or a hard-nosed midfielder. He was a central figure in the Bulldogs' resurgence under Mick Malthouse, playing a vital role in the formidable 1985 lineup that reached the Preliminary Final, a season in which he also finished runner-up in the Charles Sutton Medal.
Wallis was appointed captain in 1989, leading the playing group during the club’s tumultuous "fightback" season and standing as a pillar of stability while the club fought for its existence off the field. Although injuries, including a broken wrist and a serious knee reconstruction, interrupted his momentum in the early 1990s, he remained a key leader and defensive anchor through to the 1992 finals campaign. He retired in 1996 as a highly respected one-club player and Hall of Fame inductee, leaving a legacy that continued decades later when his son, Mitch, arrived at the Whitten Oval as a father-son recruit.
