Bio
Recruited from Swinburne Tech, Syd Francis was the youngest member of a significant Hawthorn footballing dynasty during the club's formative VFL years. Playing alongside his cousin Allan Quarterman under the coaching of his uncle—inaugural club captain Jim Jackson—Francis managed two senior appearances in the 1932 season as a utility capable of filling various "spare parts" roles. While his senior opportunities were limited compared to his brother Jim, who controversially transferred to Carlton to become a premiership star, Syd remained a devoted clubman who accumulated over 80 games in the reserves. He retained a lifelong connection to the Mayblooms and held the distinction of being Hawthorn's oldest living player prior to his passing in 2009.
