Family

Recruited by Essendon with pick 27 in the 2000 National Draft, Ted Richards spent his early years struggling to cement a permanent position in Kevin Sheedy's lineup. Often used as a utility or swingman, he found himself on the fringe of selection before requesting a trade to Sydney at the end of 2005 in search of regular opportunities. The move proved to be a career-defining decision, as the Swans transformed the athletic utility into a disciplined key defender who became a linchpin of their backline structure for over a decade.

Richards was renowned for his courage, intercept marking ability, and reliability in one-on-one contests against the competition's best power forwards. His career reached its zenith in 2012, where he played a crucial role in Sydney's premiership victory, earned his sole All-Australian selection, and finished runner-up in the Bob Skilton Medal. He retired in 2016 as a highly respected figure at the Swans, leaving a legacy of resilience and defensive excellence after successfully reinventing himself midway through his football journey.
