Originally recruited by North Melbourne, Tim McGrath struggled to cement a place in the senior lineup at Arden Street, managing just a handful of appearances over three seasons before being deemed surplus to requirements. His career was revitalised following a trade to Geelong ahead of the 1992 season, where he immediately slotted into a backline that would contest three Grand Finals in four years. While the ultimate premiership success eluded him in 1992, 1994, and 1995, McGrath transformed from a fringe player into one of the league's most durable and consistent defenders.

Instantly recognisable by his red hair, McGrath was a tenacious back pocket and half-back flanker who combined close-checking defensive work with the ability to rebound. His standout season came in 1995, earning him All-Australian honours, and he remained a key pillar of the Geelong defence well into the new millennium. Renowned for his durability, he rarely missed a match throughout his decade at Kardinia Park, eventually retiring in 2002 as a respected club veteran and one of the astute trade pickups of the 1990s.
