Bio
Arriving at the Lakeside Oval with impeccable bloodlines, Tom Hynes was the son of 1918 South Melbourne premiership player Tammy Hynes. A standout junior athlete and Victorian half-mile champion recruited from St Bede’s, the younger Hynes initially trialled with Melbourne in the 1962 pre-season before South intervened, securing his services with a job offer to ensure the family legacy continued in red and white. Standing 187cm, he possessed the height of a key position player but the engine of a mid-distance runner, typically operating as a tall wingman or flanker who could cover the ground effortlessly. Despite his athletic pedigree, Hynes found it difficult to cement a permanent spot in the senior lineup, playing sporadic football over three seasons before crossing to the VFA to join Mordialloc.
