Teams

Recruited from South Yarra, Tom McLean was a towering ruckman and key position player who stood at 191cm, a significant height for the era. He broke into the Melbourne side in 1951, managing 22 games over two seasons as a backup tall during a competitive period for the Demons. After spending 1953 out of the VFL senior side, he crossed to North Melbourne in 1954, where he added another nine games to his tally over three years. While he was a journeyman at the top level, McLean found his footing in the VFA, eventually becoming the captain of Sandringham. His football legacy extended well beyond his own playing days, as he is the uncle of former Demon and Magpie Glenn McLean and the grandfather of current Sydney Swans forward Hayden McLean.
