Bio
Hailing from the country town of Donald, Esmond "Tommy" McConville was a schoolteacher who initially resisted Melbourne's recruitment efforts, taking two years to be convinced to move to the city. When he finally debuted in 1927, he made an immediate impact as a sharp-shooting rover and forward, averaging well over a goal a game throughout his short tenure. His aggressive streak was evident when he received a four-match suspension in his first season for throwing the ball at an opponent, but his class was undeniable, earning him selection for a VFL representative side against the Wimmera League. McConville's League career was ultimately dictated by his profession, ending after just three seasons when he was transferred to a school in Beeac, though his family legacy lived on through his grandson, 194-game Carlton and St Kilda player Peter McConville.
