Selected with pick number 8 in the 2008 National Draft, Ty Vickery arrived at Punt Road with high expectations as a key position prospect capable of splitting time between the forward line and the ruck. The son of former Collingwood and Richmond player John Vickery, Ty established himself as a structural component of the Tigers' attack, forming a tandem with Jack Riewoldt. His most productive campaign came in 2011 when he booted 36 goals, showcasing his ability to take contested marks and convert set shots. However, his tenure at Richmond was frequently polarized; despite his talent, he often became a focal point for supporter frustration due to inconsistent form and questions regarding his physical intensity, while his on-field record was notably blemished by a lengthy suspension for striking West Coast ruckman Dean Cox.

At the conclusion of the 2016 season, Vickery exercised his rights as a restricted free agent to join Hawthorn, a move that generated significant discussion regarding the compensation pick Richmond received in return. The transition to Waverley Park proved difficult, as he struggled to adapt to the Hawks' system and spent significant time in the VFL with Box Hill. Unable to cement a regular spot in the senior lineup, he managed just six games in brown and gold. Despite having a year remaining on his contract, Vickery announced his retirement prior to the 2018 season, citing a loss of passion for the game to pursue a career outside of football.
