Bio
Born in Leicester, England, but raised in Western Australia, Wayne Blackwell established himself as a star with Claremont in the WAFL before crossing the Nullarbor to join Carlton. Arriving at Princes Park in 1984, he was part of a significant influx of interstate talent recruited to bolster the Blues' midfield depth. Blackwell quickly adapted to the VFL, utilising his high football IQ, clean hands, and evasiveness to become a consistent contributor as a rover and half-forward flanker.
While not known for physical dominance, Blackwell was a classy user of the ball who provided crucial link-up play and possessed a reliable sense for goal. His most significant achievement came in 1987, where he played a vital role in Carlton's premiership victory over Hawthorn. After 110 games, his career wound down in 1990, though his name remained connected to the club when his son, Luke Blackwell, was later drafted to the Blues as a father-son selection.
