Originally arriving in the AFL as a highly rated GWS Academy selection taken with pick five in the 2016 National Draft, Will Setterfield endured a frustrating start to his career in Sydney where a ruptured ACL restricted him to just two senior appearances. He requested a trade to Carlton—the club he supported growing up—ahead of the 2019 season, but despite showing flashes of his potential as a tall inside midfielder, he struggled to consistently cement a spot in the Blues' developing engine room. Deemed surplus to requirements at Princes Park following the 2022 season, Setterfield crossed to Essendon for a nominal fee to revitalise his career at a third club. A big-bodied on-baller renowned for his tackling pressure and ability to execute defensive midfield roles, he provided much-needed size and contested grunt to the Bombers' rotation during his tenure at Tullamarine.
