Bio
Selected with pick five in the renowned 2001 National Draft, Xavier Clarke arrived at St Kilda as one of the most promising talents from the Northern Territory. A dashing half-back and wingman, Clarke possessed elite speed and silky foot skills, offering the Saints a dynamic line-breaking option during their resurgence in the mid-2000s. He often played alongside his younger brother, Raphael, and was a regular contributor during the club's finals runs under Grant Thomas and Ross Lyon. However, his career was consistently plagued by soft tissue issues that prevented him from fulfilling his immense potential, culminating in a ruptured ACL that forced him to miss St Kilda's dominant 2009 season and Grand Final appearance.
Seeking a fresh start and better luck with his body, Clarke was traded to the Brisbane Lions ahead of the 2010 season. Unfortunately, the injury curse followed him north, and he managed just a single senior game for the Lions over two years before retiring in 2011. While his playing days were cut short by physical limitations, Clarke transitioned successfully into the coaching ranks post-retirement, recognised for the sharp football intellect that had defined his on-field playstyle.
