Teams

Recruited from local club St Kilda CYMS, Alan Olle’s entry into league football was delayed by his service as an RAAF sergeant during World War II, meaning he did not debut until the final round of the 1946 season. Standing at 174cm, Olle was a tenacious "battler" who primarily played as a small defender, a role reflected in his tally of just one goal from 51 senior games. While a consistent contributor for the Saints during a lean era, his departure from the VFL in 1952 became a notable case study of the times; restricted by the Coulter Law's pay caps, he left the club to accept a significantly higher wage as captain-coach of Sorrento. Olle secured a transfer with his employer, the Postmaster-General's Department, and successfully revitalised the country club, recruiting several former VFL players and leading Sorrento to a premiership in 1953.
