Bio
Recruited from the Oakleigh Chargers with pick 23 in the 2001 National Draft, Matthew McCarthy was a tall key forward equipped with strong hands and a reliable set shot. Viewed as a potential long-term solution to Geelong's structural issues inside 50, he often played as a deep target to support leading goalkicker Kent Kingsley. However, his five seasons at Kardinia Park were heavily impacted by persistent soft-tissue injuries, which prevented him from gaining the continuity needed to cement a senior spot. Although he showed glimpses of his talent during a promising run of form in 2005, McCarthy was unable to overcome his physical setbacks and was delisted at the conclusion of the 2006 season.
