Bio
Selected by Collingwood with pick 31 in the 2007 National Draft, John McCarthy was a hard-running midfielder with strong football pedigree as the son of former Geelong player Shane McCarthy. Despite showing glimpses of talent, he struggled to cement a regular spot in the Magpies' star-studded rotation during their premiership window, though he notably featured in the club's 2010 Preliminary Final victory. Seeking greater on-field opportunities, McCarthy requested a trade to Port Adelaide ahead of the 2012 season, where his career immediately flourished as he utilised his endurance and ball-winning ability to become a core component of the Power's engine room. He played 21 games in his debut season at Alberton, finishing eighth in the best and fairest, before his life was cut short in a tragic accident in Las Vegas during an end-of-season trip later that year.
