Bio
Born Andrew Guthrie, the key defender known as Andrew Merryweather began his career with Fitzroy, managing a solitary senior appearance in 1982 after coming through the club's under-19s. Following a six-year exile where he plied his trade in country and suburban football with Ballarat and Doncaster, he was handed a lifeline by Essendon as a 27-year-old mature-age recruit for the 1988 season. Merryweather held his spot in the Bombers' backline for the first five rounds, but his VFL career came to an abrupt halt after being tasked with manning Gary Ablett Snr, who booted six goals in a match that proved to be Merryweather's final game at the top level. He later reverted to his birth surname, leaving his most enduring mark on the game as the father of Geelong premiership players Cameron and Zach Guthrie.
