Arriving at Geelong via the rookie list to join his older brother Cameron, Zach Guthrie was initially defined by his incredibly slight frame, viewed by many as a long-term project requiring significant physical development. For the first half of his career, he operated on the fringes of selection, often acting as defensive depth while oscillating between state league duties and the senior side. However, his trajectory shifted dramatically during the club's 2022 premiership campaign, where he shed the tag of a depth player to become a vital intercepting defender known for his ability to read the play and support his teammates in the air.
Having cemented his position in the Cats' best 22, Guthrie developed into a composed and courageous figure in the back half, utilising his elite spatial awareness to cut off opposition attacks. His evolution from an undersized rookie into a premiership regular serves as a testament to Geelong's development program, with Guthrie eventually becoming a reliable senior leader in defence who offers both stability and creative drive from the backline.
