Bio
Recruited from Shepparton with pick 18 in the 1988 National Draft, Anthony Stevens evolved from a flanker into one of the era's most courageous midfielders. A fierce competitor who often played through significant pain, he became the personification of the 'Shinboner Spirit' at North Melbourne, combining elite defensive accountability with the ability to win contested ball in the centre square. His disciplined approach allowed him to negate the influence of the competition's best playmakers while remaining a damaging offensive threat himself.
Stevens was instrumental in North Melbourne's golden era, playing a vital role in the 1996 and 1999 premiership sides. His individual excellence was recognised with dual Syd Barker Medals in 1997 and 1999, as well as All-Australian honours in 1998. Following the departure of Wayne Carey under difficult circumstances, Stevens assumed the captaincy in 2002 and provided stabilising leadership during a testing period for the club. He retired in 2004 as a widely respected club icon and was later named in the North Melbourne Team of the Century.
