Bio
Recruited from Yea via the football factory of Assumption College, Bernie McCarthy arrived at Arden Street in 1962 and quickly became a central figure in North Melbourne's structure. A tall, athletic key position player who often alternated between the forward line and the ruck, he was best known for his mobility and willingness to take the game on. Unlike the traditional "catch and kick" big men of the era, McCarthy frequently used his superior handballing skills to keep play moving, earning him a reputation as a forward ahead of his time who could link up effectively with fellow tall John Dugdale.
McCarthy’s durability and influence were highlighted by his ownership of the number one guernsey, which he wore in more games than any other Kangaroo. His individual excellence was recognised with Victorian state selection in 1967 and 1970, and while a VFL day premiership eluded him during a lean period for the club, he played a crucial role in the side's Night Series premiership victories in 1965 and 1966. He departed the VFL in 1971 due to persistent achilles trouble, finishing the year with Preston in the VFA, but remains remembered as a loyal Shinboner and a Life Member of the club.
