Bio
Known as "Rookie," Bernie Nolan was a mobile ruckman whose football journey was frequently interrupted by his off-field professional ambitions. A gifted rower who represented Victoria, Nolan brought elite endurance to the Melbourne following division, playing a pivotal role in the club's rise up the ladder during the 1907 and 1908 seasons. He was appointed captain in 1909, but the demands of his budding career as a solicitor often took precedence, leading to a premature retirement and only sporadic appearances in 1910 and 1912 when the Redlegs were desperate for numbers. A successful lawyer who later acted as a legal adviser to John Wren, Nolan remained involved in the game after hanging up the boots and served as the senior coach of Richmond in 1918.
