Bio
Recruited from North Geelong, Bill Goggin was a local product who became the heartbeat of the Cats' midfield for over a decade. Standing at just 175cm, he was a tenacious rover renowned for his elite reading of the play and clinical distribution. Goggin is best remembered for his telepathic on-field partnership with legendary ruckman Polly Farmer; the duo revolutionised the game with Farmer's long handballs finding Goggin on the burst, who would then deliver lace-out passes to full-forward Doug Wade. This "ruck-rover-forward" combination was the engine room of Geelong's attacking dominance throughout the 1960s.
A key member of the 1963 premiership side, Goggin’s influence extended well beyond his link-up play. He was a fierce competitor who captained the club from 1968 until his retirement, leading by example with his consistency and professionalism. His standing at Kardinia Park was cemented with two Carji Greeves Medals in 1967 and 1970, eventually earning him a place in the Geelong Team of the Century and the Australian Football Hall of Fame. While he later served the club as a coach, he remains immortalised as one of the sharpest and most effective rovers to ever wear the hoops.
