Bio
Bearing one of the most famous surnames in West Australian football, Brandon Matera entered the AFL with significant expectations as the son of Wally and nephew of West Coast legends Peter and Phil. Originally recruited by Gold Coast as a priority access selection, he was a foundation player for the Suns and immediately displayed the natural goal sense characteristic of his family tree. While capable of turning matches with his sharp left foot and crumbing ability, his seven-season tenure in Queensland was often interrupted by soft-tissue injuries and fluctuations in form that prevented him from fully cementing a status as an elite small forward.
Matera secured a trade to Fremantle ahead of the 2018 season, returning to his home state to add potency to the Dockers' attack. His time in purple was highlighted by a strong 2019 campaign where he booted 30 goals and formed a dangerous partnership with Michael Walters. However, he struggled to retain his place in the senior side during the shortened 2020 season under new coach Justin Longmuir. Matera was delisted at the conclusion of that year, ending his AFL journey as a talented, opportunist forward who played 144 games across two clubs.
