Bio
Recruited from South Fremantle, Peter Matera arrived at West Coast in 1990 and immediately redefined the role of the wingman with his electric pace and long-range goal-kicking. Hailing from the rural town of Wagin, he utilised the expansive wings of Subiaco Oval to devastating effect, regularly breaking lines to turn defence into attack. While he played alongside his brother Wally and later his younger brother Phil, Peter stood apart for his sheer athletic dominance and ball use, becoming the prototype for the modern running midfielder who could hurt opposition teams on the scoreboard.
Matera's career is most famously defined by his performance in the 1992 Grand Final, where he booted five goals from the midfield to secure the Eagles' maiden premiership and claim the Norm Smith Medal. He was equally pivotal in the 1994 flag triumph and remained an elite contributor throughout the decade, earning five All-Australian selections and finishing runner-up in the 1994 Brownlow Medal. A one-club player who retired in 2003 after 253 games, he is widely regarded as West Coast's greatest ever player, a legacy cemented by his inclusion in the Australian Football Hall of Fame and the Eagles' Team of the Century.
