Family

Arriving at Fitzroy from Wilston Grange in the QAFL, Brett Grimley created a slice of history alongside his father Ken as the first Queensland father-son combination to compete in the VFL. A solid 190cm key position prospect, he debuted in the opening round of the 1983 season but found it difficult to command a permanent spot in the senior lineup over his three years at the Junction Oval. While he struggled to replicate his state league dominance at the elite level—managing just two goals across 18 matches—he proved his quality upon returning to the Sunshine State, where he reinvented himself as a formidable full-forward. He topped the QAFL goalkicking with a century of majors in 1987 and represented Queensland at the 1988 Bicentennial Carnival, eventually seeing his own son, Sam, continue the family legacy at Hawthorn and Essendon.
