Bio
Selected by Hawthorn with pick 39 in the 2009 National Draft, Sam Grimley was an athletic key forward and relief ruckman who faced the unenviable task of trying to break into a premiership-calibre forward line. During his six seasons at Waverley Park, Grimley found his path to senior selection blocked by stars like Lance Franklin, Jarryd Roughead, and Jack Gunston, limiting him to just three games in brown and gold. While he struggled to bridge the gap to AFL intensity, he became a dominant force for Box Hill, winning back-to-back Frosty Miller Medals as the VFL's leading goalkicker in 2014 and 2015. Following his delisting by the Hawks, he was recruited by Essendon as a "top-up" player for the 2016 season to help cover the squad depleted by WADA suspensions. Grimley added four games for the Bombers before finishing his AFL career, largely remembered as a prolific state-league scorer who was unfortunate to be listed during a period of unprecedented depth at Hawthorn.
