Bio
Recruited from Sturt with pick 18 in the 2012 National Draft, Brodie Grundy redefined the expectations of a modern ruckman during his decade-long tenure at Collingwood. Unlike traditional talls, Grundy operated essentially as an extra midfielder, renowned for his elite follow-up work at ground level, tackling pressure, and ability to win his own clearances. His dominance peaked between 2018 and 2019, yielding two All-Australian selections and back-to-back Copeland Trophies, cementing his status as the premier ruck in the competition. However, a lucrative long-term contract eventually squeezed Collingwood's salary cap, leading to a high-profile and emotionally charged trade to Melbourne at the end of 2022.
The move to the Demons was touted as creating an unstoppable partnership with Max Gawn, but the dual-ruck experiment failed to function effectively. Grundy struggled to impact matches when resting forward and was eventually dropped for the 2023 finals series, ending his stint at Melbourne after a single season. Seeking a return to primary ruck duties, he was traded to Sydney ahead of the 2024 season. The move immediately revitalised his career, as he filled a desperate need for the Swans, returning to his best form as a solo ruckman and serving as a vital contested beast for their midfield group.
