Bio
Recruited from local club Barwon Heads, Bruce Nankervis arrived at Kardinia Park in 1970 and established himself as a cornerstone of the Geelong defence alongside his younger brother, Ian. While Ian eventually set the club's games record, Bruce carved out his own distinguished career as a dashing half-back flanker who combined defensive accountability with a natural instinct for counter-attacking football. His ability to read the play and his composure under pressure allowed him to launch offensive forays from the backline, making him one of the premier small defenders of his era.
Nankervis's consistency and leadership were formally recognised when he assumed the club captaincy for the 1976 and 1977 seasons. His individual excellence peaked in 1975 when he won the Carji Greeves Medal as Geelong's best and fairest player, standing out in a team comprised of significant talent. A durable and loyal one-club player, he represented Victoria on multiple occasions and remained a fixture in the senior side until his retirement in 1984. With 253 games to his name, he remains a highly respected figure in Cats history, remembered as the elder half of a sibling duo that anchored the club for over a decade.
