Bio
Recruited from local club Barwon, Ian Nankervis arrived at Kardinia Park in the late 1960s and rapidly established himself as the heartbeat of the Geelong Football Club. Playing alongside his brother Bruce, he became renowned not for flashy brilliance, but for an unshakeable consistency and elite endurance that allowed him to run opponents into the ground. A tenacious rover and midfielder, Nankervis was a fierce competitor who relied on sheer work rate and determination to win the ball, traits that saw him awarded the Carji Greeves Medal as the club's best and fairest on three separate occasions.
Throughout the 1970s and early 1980s, Nankervis served as a pillar of leadership for the Cats, captaining the side for five seasons. His durability was legendary in an era where sports science was in its infancy, allowing him to maintain a high standard of performance well into his thirties. While team success in the form of a premiership eluded him, his individual contribution was recognised with regular selection for Victoria and immense respect across the league as one of the game's true gentlemen and hardest workers.
