Bio
Selected by Richmond with pick 15 in the 2015 National Draft, Daniel Rioli arrived at Punt Road carrying the weight of one of football's most celebrated surnames. As the great-nephew of Maurice Rioli and cousin to Dean and Cyril, he was immediately thrust into the spotlight, inheriting the number 17 guernsey. Initially deployed as a high-pressure small forward, Rioli became a cornerstone of the Tigers' "mosquito fleet," using his elite chasing and tackling to fuel Richmond's chaos-ball game plan during their dynasty years. His defensive efforts and knack for clutch moments helped secure three premierships, the 2017 Goal of the Year, and the 2019 Yiooken Award.
As his influence as a forward began to wane, Rioli successfully reinvented himself as a dashing half-back flanker. This positional shift unlocked his running capacity and ball use, transforming him into one of the competition's most damaging rebounding defenders and culminating in a maiden Jack Dyer Medal in 2024. Following that career-best season, he requested a trade to the Gold Coast Suns to reunite with former coach Damien Hardwick. The high-profile move, executed for two early draft picks, positions Rioli as a marquee playmaker for the Suns, tasked with driving standards and providing offensive run from the backline.
