Taken with the first overall pick in the 1993 National Draft by the Sydney Swans, West Australian Darren Gaspar arrived with high expectations. However, his tenure in the Harbour City was brief and ended in controversy. After just two seasons, he utilized the 1996 preseason draft to facilitate a move to Richmond, commanding a lucrative contract that placed immediate scrutiny on his output. This high-profile switch defined the early narrative of his career, as he sought to justify the heavy investment made by the Tigers while holding down a key defensive post.

Once settled at Punt Road, Gaspar evolved into one of the league's premier full-backs. While his kicking skills occasionally drew ire from supporters, his closing speed, reach, and disciplined spoiling ability made him an elite stopper against the era's dominant power forwards. His career peaked at the turn of the millennium, earning back-to-back All-Australian selections in 2000 and 2001, and claiming the Jack Dyer Medal in the latter year as the Tigers reached a Preliminary Final. Despite suffering an ACL injury in 2003, he returned to play four more seasons before departing the club early in 2007, remembered as a durable and often understated pillar of the Richmond defence.
