Bio
Recruited from Oakleigh Districts, David Cloke established himself as a durable and imposing figure at Richmond during the club's golden era in the 1970s. A mobile ruckman capable of resting forward to great effect, he offered a dual threat that resulted in over 300 career goals. He tasted ultimate success early, featuring in the Tigers' 1974 premiership side as a teenager before playing a pivotal role in the club's dominant 1980 flag victory. By the early 1980s, Cloke was firmly established as one of the competition's premier big men, renowned for his strong overhead marking, stamina, and distinctive kicking style.
Cloke became the headline act of a fierce transfer war between Richmond and Collingwood following the 1982 season. Amidst financial disputes and aggressive recruiting by the Magpies' "New Magpies" administration, Cloke controversially crossed over to Victoria Park. Despite the hostile context of his transfer, he proved to be an outstanding acquisition for Collingwood, winning the Copeland Trophy in 1984 and serving as club captain for three seasons. He maintained high standards of performance throughout his tenure in black and white, holding down the number one ruck spot and providing leadership to a changing list.
