Recruited to St Kilda under the father-son rule, David Sierakowski was the son of former Saint and WA football identity Brian Sierakowski. After developing his game with the Sandringham Dragons, he made his AFL debut in 1994 and quickly won the club's Best First Year Player award. Standing 193cm, he became a structural pillar for the Saints during their mid-90s resurgence, utilised as an athletic key defender who could also swing forward or pinch-hit in the ruck. His stint at Moorabbin peaked with an appearance in the 1997 Grand Final, where he played in the heartbreaking loss to Adelaide.

Following the 2000 season, Sierakowski requested a trade to West Coast to return to his home state of Western Australia. His tenure with the Eagles began in disastrous fashion; during his club debut in Round 1, 2001, he was knocked unconscious and ruptured his ACL in the same contest, wiping out his entire first season. He fought his way back to play sporadic games over the next two years but struggled to recapture his best form due to persistent injury issues, eventually retiring in 2003 with just over 100 senior games to his credit.
