Bio
Recruited from Horsham via the club's under-19s, Dean Hartigan was a sturdy back pocket defender who debuted for Essendon in 1974 alongside future ruck legend Simon Madden. The son of former Hawthorn and St Kilda player Jack Hartigan, Dean is perhaps best remembered for his unfortunate involvement in the infamous "Battle of Windy Hill" against Carlton in 1975, where he was knocked unconscious behind play in a fiery clash that resulted in eight reports. Despite winning the reserves Best and Fairest in 1976, Hartigan struggled to cement a permanent senior spot in the backline and departed the VFL after the 1977 season. He went on to enjoy a successful stint in the VFA, playing in a premiership with Coburg in 1979, and is the father of former Richmond utility Brent Hartigan.
